CNC Machinist
Talascend is currently seeking a CNC Machinist for a contract opportunity with our client in Torrance, California.
Overview
This role involves operating CNC equipment in a high-mix, low-volume production environment, primarily working with aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium. The machinist will set up, operate, and verify CNC lathes and mills to meet tight tolerances, ensuring quality and precision in rotating assembly parts.
Responsibilities
- Operate CNC lathes and mills, including setting up and running production jobs
- Perform first article inspections and verify parts against specifications
- Manage multiple machines simultaneously to support work cell operations
- Set up and bore jaws to hold runout tolerances; make minor G-code updates as needed
- Use blueprints and design sketches to ensure proper dimensions and tolerances
- Verify and sign off on all aspects of the operation, including linear dimensions, outside diameter, inside diameter, and runout
- Utilize manual and automated measurement tools, including air gauging when applicable
- Support production goals by managing high precision machining tasks and ensuring quality standards
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- 2-4 years of experience operating CNC equipment, specifically lathes and mills
- Experience with CNC lathes, particularly Ikegai TU15 models, or similar equipment
- Familiarity with early Fanuc controllers
- Strong understanding of tight tolerance measurement, especially .0002 inches on bore and runout
- Ability to verify quality and sign off on operations without first piece inspection
- Experience with aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium machining
- Ability to manage multiple machines and perform setting up and operation tasks independently
- Knowledge of blueprints, design sketches, and machining procedures
- Ability to work safely and adhere to physical risk precautions, including lifting exceeding 30 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with air gauging for verifying bore tolerances
- Certifications relevant to machining or inspection roles
Standard shift for this role is third shift, from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am.
