Talascend is currently seeking an Operating Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Overview
This position involves overseeing building operations with a focus on system management, vendor coordination, and tenant relations in a commercial environment. It requires independent decision-making and technical leadership to ensure optimal building performance.
Responsibilities
- Manage and prioritize facility operations, coordinating multiple maintenance activities and determining resource allocation
- Oversee vendor relationships, including scheduling, scope review, quality assurance, and contractor management
- Provide technical guidance and direction to maintenance team members on complex building system issues
- Lead troubleshooting efforts across all building systems including electrical, mechanical, DDC and pneumatic controls, making informed decisions on repair approaches
- Maintain and optimize the work order system (CMMS), ensuring timely completion of tenant service requests and accurate documentation
- Perform advanced maintenance tasks including plumbing, electrical work, water treatment, lighting systems, and specialized building equipment (as allowed by licensing requirements)
- Serve as primary point of contact for tenant-facing maintenance issues, delivering professional service and clear communication
- Support on-call or emergency response situations, acting as technical lead during critical incidents
- Drive preventive maintenance programs and identify opportunities for system improvements
- Ensure compliance with all safety procedures and building codes
- Mentor team members and participate in technical training initiatives
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in commercial facility operations, building maintenance, or engineering
- Demonstrated ability to lead, delegate, and make independent operational decisions
- Trade school education, union training, military service, or college degree preferred
- Universal CFC EPA certification or willingness to obtain within first year (support provided)
- Strong commercial building systems knowledge (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls)
- Proven vendor management and coordination experience
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams) and CMMS platforms
- Excellent communication skills with ability to interact professionally with tenants, vendors, and leadership
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work comfortably on ladders up to 30 feet
- Ability to frequently climb, bend, kneel, lift and/or drive
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize competing demands
